Why Solfeggio Frequencies Work — The Science Behind the Sound

Sound Healing • Cerridwen Digital • April 2026

There's a lot of noise around Solfeggio frequencies — some of it genuinely interesting science, some of it wishful thinking. Here's what the evidence actually supports, and why it matters regardless of the mystical framing.

What Are Solfeggio Frequencies?

The Solfeggio frequencies are a set of tones — 396 Hz, 417 Hz, 528 Hz, 639 Hz, 741 Hz, 852 Hz, and three additional ones at 174 Hz, 285 Hz, and 963 Hz — that have been associated with healing properties in various traditions. They derive from a medieval musical scale and were rediscovered and popularised in the 1990s.

The specific healing claims attached to individual frequencies vary and many are not scientifically verified. What is scientifically supported is the underlying mechanism: the effect of sound waves on the body, brain, and nervous system.

Cymatics: Sound Made Visible

The most visually striking evidence for frequency effects on matter comes from cymatics — the study of how sound organises physical substances into geometric patterns. Ernst Chladni, an 18th century physicist, discovered that when he drew a bow across a metal plate covered in sand, the sand organised itself into complex symmetrical patterns. Different frequencies produced entirely different patterns.

This isn't mysticism. It's physics. Sound waves create pressure nodes — points of stability — and the sand migrates to those stable points. The result is a visible map of the frequency's geometry. Our Solfeggio app renders these Chladni patterns in real time using the actual mathematical equations, not artistic approximations.

Different frequencies genuinely produce different geometric structures in physical matter. That's verifiable, repeatable, and beautiful.

Binaural Beats and Brainwave Entrainment

This is where the strongest evidence lives. When you play a slightly different frequency in each ear — say 200 Hz in the left and 210 Hz in the right — your brain perceives a third frequency equal to the difference: 10 Hz. This is a binaural beat.

Your brain has a tendency to synchronise its electrical activity to external rhythmic stimuli — a phenomenon called entrainment. The 10 Hz beat in the example above falls in the alpha brainwave range, associated with relaxed alertness. Research has shown binaural beats in different frequency ranges can influence:

Delta (0.5–4 Hz) — deep sleep and healing. Theta (4–8 Hz) — meditation, creativity, REM sleep. Alpha (8–14 Hz) — relaxed focus, stress reduction. Beta (14–30 Hz) — active thinking, concentration. Gamma (30+ Hz) — peak cognition, heightened awareness.

This is genuinely supported by multiple peer-reviewed studies. It is not pseudoscience. The brain responds measurably to carefully engineered audio.

The Honest Caveat

The specific healing claims for individual Solfeggio frequencies — that 528 Hz repairs DNA, that 396 Hz dissolves guilt — are not scientifically proven. Some preliminary research exists around 528 Hz specifically, but the evidence base is thin and often poorly controlled.

What is well-supported is that intentional listening to specific frequencies, in a quiet environment, with attention and intention, has measurable effects on nervous system state. Whether those effects come from the specific frequency or from the practice of deep, focused listening is harder to separate.

The act of sitting still, putting on headphones, and attending to a single sound for twenty minutes is itself therapeutic — regardless of which frequency you choose.

Try It For Yourself

Our Solfeggio app is free and runs entirely in your browser. It uses real Chladni plate physics to render the cymatics, and genuine binaural beat generation for each frequency pairing. No ads, no accounts, no data collected. Just sound and geometry.
